What is Sexual Assault?

Sexual Violence is any unwanted, non-consensual sexual act. It occurs against a person’s will through force, the threat of force, coercion, or manipulation. Sexual violence is a crime of power and control; it is not motivated by passion. Sexual assault is motivated by a desire to dominate and humiliate the victim in the most intimate way possible.

Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence is a broad term that includes:

  • Rape
  • Date rape
  • Incest
  • Child sexual abuse
  • Attempted rape
  • Forced oral sex
  • Spousal / cohabitating rape
  • Sexual harassment
  • Exhibitionism (flashing)
  • Voyeurism (peeping tom)
  • Forced exposure to pornographic material
  • Obscene phone calls

Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence affect people in every community and on campuses across this country. Anyone can be a victim, regardless of gender, age, race, and economic background. Here are some alarming statistics regarding sexual assault:

  • Approximately 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18.
  • 85% of victims know their offenders.
  • Less than one-third of sexual assaults are reported to the police.
