WFC Per Diem Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor/Advocate provides support to victims/survivors of any type of sexual assault (past or recent) and to friends and family of sexual assault victims. Provides medical and legal advocacy to victims, outreach, and education to the community. Responsible for staffing the agency’s 24-hour hotline. Being a Per Diem Counselor/Advocate offers the opportunity to learn new skills, gain certification as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor/Advocate, and to work with diverse populations. Extensive training program and on-going training provided.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalency required. Associate Degree preferred.
- Available weekends (required); and some weekdays.
- Meets all standards of employability (attendance, reliability, timeliness, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Good listening skills.
- Ability to be empathetic to client needs.
- Open-minded and non-judgmental.
- Dependable.
- Must obtain and maintain certification as Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor required (training provided by agency).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide crisis intervention and supportive counseling to victims and their loved ones.
- Provide physical accompaniment, advocacy and support for the client and family or friends throughout the hospital, police and/or court system.
- Pick up at least four 12-hour hotline shifts per month, with an emphasis on filling Friday – Sunday shifts. Attend a minimum of 6 hours annually of re-certification training/meetings.
- Refer clients for additional services when appropriate, and communicate with full-time SACS Advocates regarding ongoing needs for clients in a timely manner.
- Maintain client intakes and service logs.
- Occasionally help with special events and/or outreach activities.
- Additional related tasks as requested.
Physical Demands:
- Must be willing to be certified as a sexual assault crisis counselor.
- Ability to travel frequently within service area. If using a personal vehicle, valid Connecticut driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of vehicle insurance is required.
- Knowledge of standard office environment. Includes work performed off site, in medical facilities and the court system.
- Hotline hours include evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.
Work schedule: Per Diem schedule: 7 days a week; 6:00am – 6:00pm; 6:00pm – 6:00am; $75 for each 12 hour shift; plus additional hourly rate of $16.35 when services are required for hotline calls, hospital or police accompaniment.
